James Joyce

Born in Dublin, Ireland, James Joyce is infamous for being one of the world’s most ingenious authors.

Although he is primarily known for his masterpiece works, Ulysses, Finnegan’s Wake, and Dubliners, Joyce was also a very talented poet. His works have been printed in countless publications and translated into dozens of languages. 

Some of his writing, such as in Ulysses, tends to be a bit harder to read simply because of the language he uses.

But if you can get through his use of Ireland’s vernacular of the time, you’ll love the book’s use of multiple languages, and subtle, yet clever humor. Which are sure to keep you intrigued right until the very end.

The book is a compilation of short stories, focusing on the life of average people in Dublin a century ago. 

According to many, Dubliners is a stark and bleak look at Ireland in the early 1900s. But critics, and Joyce fans worldwide, know Dubliners as brilliant, honest, subtle, and very real. 

 

Charles Bukowski

For another realistic, but sometimes, dark and drunken view of the world, check out Charles Bukowski.

Bukowski is another world-renown author, famous for his novels like Ham On Rye and Post-Office. Aside, he was also a prolific poet and has published at least 13 novels.

In many of his poems and books, the main character is Henry Chinaski, a drunken gambler, who represents of vivid representation of the author himself.

In his novel, Post Office, you’ll follow the life of Henri Chinaski, who “accidentally” spends more than a decade working at the post office.
