About the Author

Lu Yu (733–804), revered as the Sage of Tea, was a Tang dynasty scholar, poet, and innovator whose profound contributions to tea culture have endured for over a millennium. Orphaned young and raised in a Buddhist monastery, he immersed himself in the serene rituals of tea preparation, which inspired his seminal work, the world's first comprehensive treatise on tea. In 'Tea Classic' (Cha Jing), Lu Yu meticulously documented the origins, cultivation, harvesting, processing, utensils, and appreciation of tea, blending practical knowledge with philosophical insights to elevate it from a medicinal brew to an art form central to Chinese aesthetics and social life. His writings not only standardized tea practices but also influenced global tea traditions, cementing his legacy as the father of tea scholarship amid the vibrant intellectual milieu of the Tang era.
