About the Author

Shunryu Suzuki (1906-1971) was a revered Japanese Soto Zen monk and teacher who profoundly influenced Western Buddhism through his establishment of the San Francisco Zen Center in 1962 and the founding of Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, the first Buddhist monastery outside Asia. Born in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, Suzuki trained under the renowned master Gyokujun So-on and immigrated to the United States in 1959, where he dedicated his life to transmitting authentic Zen practice amid the countercultural ferment of the 1960s. His teachings emphasized simplicity, mindfulness, and the direct experience of zazen meditation, encouraging practitioners to embrace the present moment without attachment. Compiled posthumously from his lectures, Not Always So: Practicing the True Spirit of Zen – The Final Teachings of Shunryu Suzuki to Empower Your Freedom captures his gentle yet incisive wisdom, offering timeless guidance for modern seekers on the path to enlightenment and inner freedom.
