About the Author

Han Feizi, a pivotal figure in the Warring States period (c. 280–233 BCE), was a Chinese philosopher and statesman whose ideas profoundly shaped Legalist thought, emphasizing rigorous laws, administrative techniques, and the power of the ruler to maintain order amid chaos. Born into the royal family of the state of Han, he studied under Confucian scholars like Xunzi but ultimately critiqued their ideals, advocating instead for a pragmatic, authoritarian governance model to unify China. Despite his intellectual brilliance, Han Feizi met a tragic end, imprisoned and forced to commit suicide by the jealous Qin prime minister Li Si, a former classmate. His seminal work, the Han Feizi, compiles essays, anecdotes, and dialogues that blend sharp wit with incisive political analysis, influencing the Qin dynasty's unification and enduring as a cornerstone of Chinese political philosophy.
