About the Author

Yuri Rytkheu, a pioneering voice from the remote Chukchi Peninsula in northeastern Siberia, was a celebrated author whose works bridged indigenous oral traditions with modern literature. Born in 1930 to a family of reindeer herders, he grew up immersed in the myths and rhythms of Chukchi culture, which profoundly shaped his storytelling. As one of the first indigenous writers to gain international recognition, Rytkheu explored themes of cultural survival, colonialism, and the clash between traditional ways and Soviet modernity. His novel The Chukchi Bible masterfully reimagines the epic of the Chukchi people through a biblical lens, blending folklore with historical narrative. Throughout his career, Rytkheu authored over a dozen books, earning accolades like the Russian State Prize and becoming a symbol of Arctic literary resilience until his passing in 2008.
