About the Author
Yung Wing (1828-1912) was a pioneering Chinese intellectual and diplomat whose life bridged the vast cultural chasms between East and West during a transformative era. Born in Guangdong Province, he became the first Chinese student to graduate from an American university—Yale in 1854—where he immersed himself in Western education and ideals of progress. As a fervent advocate for modernization, Yung played a pivotal role in establishing the Chinese Educational Mission, sending hundreds of young scholars to the United States to acquire scientific and technical knowledge. His seminal autobiography, My Life in China and America, chronicles his extraordinary journey from humble origins to influential reformer, offering profound insights into the challenges of cross-cultural exchange and the quest for national renewal amid imperial decline.
