About the Author

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, born in 1839 as Owariya Yōsui, was a pioneering Japanese artist renowned for his mastery of ukiyo-e woodblock prints during the late Edo and early Meiji periods. Emerging from a tumultuous childhood marked by family strife, Yoshitoshi apprenticed under the influential Utagawa Kuniyoshi, honing his skills in depicting dynamic scenes of history, folklore, and the supernatural. His innovative use of bold colors, dramatic compositions, and psychological depth elevated him beyond traditional printmaking, influencing modern manga and anime. Despite personal struggles with poverty and health, Yoshitoshi produced over 10,000 designs, capturing Japan's transition from feudalism to modernity. He passed away in 1892, leaving a legacy as the 'last great ukiyo-e master.'
