About the Author

Yu-Lan Fung (1895-1990) was a pioneering Chinese philosopher and historian whose scholarly contributions profoundly shaped the understanding of Eastern thought in the West. Born in Tanghe, Henan Province, he pursued advanced studies at Peking University and later at Columbia University, where he earned his Ph.D. under the guidance of John Dewey. Fung's career spanned teaching positions at Yenching University and National Peking University, and he served as a cultural ambassador during turbulent times, including the Republican era and beyond. Renowned for his meticulous scholarship, he bridged ancient Chinese wisdom with modern philosophical discourse, emphasizing the humanistic and ethical dimensions of Confucianism, Daoism, and other traditions. His seminal work, A History of Chinese Philosophy, Vol. 1: The Period of the Philosophers (from the Beginnings to Circa 100 B. C.), remains a cornerstone text, offering an authoritative chronicle of early philosophical developments from the sages to the Han dynasty.
