About the Author

Marsilius of Padua was a medieval Italian scholar and political thinker whose writings challenged the authority of the papacy and advocated for the supremacy of secular governance. His most influential work, Peaceful Defender, laid the groundwork for later theories of popular sovereignty and the separation of church and state. Drawing on Aristotelian philosophy and Roman law, he argued that political power should derive from the consent of the governed rather than divine right. His ideas were considered radical in his time and contributed significantly to the intellectual currents that would later influence Renaissance political thought.
