About the Author
Yang Xiong (53 BC – AD 18), a distinguished scholar and philosopher of the Western Han dynasty, was renowned for his profound contributions to Chinese literature and thought. Born in Shu commandery (modern-day Sichuan), he rose to prominence in the imperial court through his erudition and moral integrity, serving as a court academician and advisor to Emperor Cheng. Yang's works reflect a deep engagement with classical traditions, blending linguistic analysis, philosophical inquiry, and poetic expression to explore the nuances of human nature and society. Despite facing political turbulence, including the downfall of his patron consort Zhao Feiyan, he remained steadfast in his pursuit of sage-like wisdom, influencing later generations with his emphasis on authenticity and restraint in language and conduct. His legacy endures as a bridge between the Han and earlier Confucian ideals.
