About the Author
Yamamoto Tsunetomo (1659-1719) was a Japanese samurai and scholar from the Saga Domain in Hizen Province, renowned for his profound insights into the bushido code and the warrior's ethos during the early Edo period. Born into a family of retainers, he served under the daimyo Nabeshima Mitsushige but chose to become a monk after his lord's death, dedicating his life to Zen Buddhism and the preservation of samurai traditions. His teachings, compiled orally by his disciple Tashiro Tsuramoto, emphasize unwavering loyalty, the acceptance of death, and living in the moment as the path to true honor. Despite being largely forgotten for centuries, Tsunetomo's work has experienced a modern resurgence, influencing martial arts, philosophy, and popular culture worldwide with its stark, unyielding wisdom on discipline and self-sacrifice.
