About the Author
Xu Yuanchong (1921–2021) was a pioneering Chinese translator and scholar renowned for his innovative approach to rendering classical Chinese poetry into English and French, emphasizing musicality, rhythm, and aesthetic beauty to capture the essence of the originals. Born in Nanchang, Jiangxi, he studied at the National Southwest Associated University and later at the University of Paris, where he earned a doctorate in literature. Throughout his illustrious career, Xu translated over 100 works, including masterpieces by Tang dynasty poets, and served as a professor at Peking University. His translations bridged Eastern and Western literary traditions, earning him accolades such as the UNESCO Translation Prize and the title of 'People's Literature Artist.' Xu's lifelong dedication to poetic translation not only preserved China's cultural heritage but also enriched global appreciation of its lyrical depths, influencing generations of readers and scholars alike.
