Born in Rockland, Maine, he studied at Harvard University and the École Normale de Musique in Paris, where he honed his skills under masters like Nadia Boulanger. Piston composed a wide array of works, including eight symphonies, ballets, and chamber music, earning the Pulitzer Prize twice for his Symphony No. 3 and Symphony No. 7.
