Vladimir Lossky (1903-1958) was a prominent Russian Orthodox theologian and philosopher, renowned for his profound contributions to the understanding of Eastern Christian mysticism and doctrine. Born in Göttingen, Germany, to the philosopher Nikolai Lossky, he spent much of his life in exile following the Russian Revolution, eventually settling in Paris where he became a key figure in the Russian émigré intellectual community. As a professor at the St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute, Lossky emphasized the mystical theology of the Eastern Church, drawing on patristic sources to explore themes of divine essence, personhood, and theosis. His seminal work, The Meaning of Icons (English and German Edition), elucidates the theological significance of Orthodox iconography, bridging art and spirituality in a way that continues to influence contemporary theology and liturgical studies.
