About the Author

Violet Jessop, born in 1887 in Argentina to Irish immigrants, became one of the most remarkable survivors of maritime history through her extraordinary experiences aboard the world's most infamous ocean liners. As a stewardess and nurse, she first boarded the RMS Olympic in 1910, enduring its collision with HMS Hawke just a year later. Undeterred, Jessop joined the crew of the RMS Titanic in 1912, witnessing the ship's tragic sinking after striking an iceberg, from which she escaped in a lifeboat only to be rescued by the RMS Carpathia. Her resilience shone again in 1916 when she served on the HMHS Britannic, which struck a mine and sank in the Aegean Sea during World War I; Jessop survived by diving from the ship and swimming to safety. Throughout her career spanning over four decades at sea, she documented her harrowing yet inspiring life in her memoirs, offering a firsthand account of survival, courage, and the indomitable human spirit amid disaster.
