Vassilis Vassilikos
About the Author
Vassilis Vassilikos is a prolific Greek author, poet, and playwright whose literary career spans over six decades, marked by a profound engagement with the political and social upheavals of modern Greece. Born in 1934 in Kavala, he studied law in Thessaloniki before dedicating himself to writing, drawing inspiration from his country's turbulent history, including the Greek Civil War and the military junta of the 1960s and 1970s. Vassilikos's works often blend fiction with journalistic elements, exploring themes of resistance, exile, and human resilience. His novel Z, a gripping political thriller based on the 1963 assassination of leftist politician Grigoris Lambrakis, became an international sensation, adapted into an Academy Award-winning film by Costa-Gavras in 1969. Exiled during the dictatorship, he continued to write from abroad, returning to Greece after democracy's restoration. A former diplomat and cultural attaché, Vassilikos remains an influential voice in contemporary literature, advocating for freedom and justice through his evocative narratives.
