Unica Zürn
About the Author
Unica Zürn (1916–1970) was a German writer and artist whose life and work were profoundly shaped by her experiences with mental illness, surrealist influences, and a deep immersion in automatic writing and anagrams. Born in Berlin, she began her career as an illustrator and model before turning to literature in the 1950s, collaborating closely with artist Hans Bellmer, whose erotic and obsessive themes echoed in her own creations. Zürn's prose often blurred the boundaries between reality and hallucination, drawing from her time in psychiatric institutions and her fascination with the subconscious. Her seminal work, Dark Spring (Exact Change), a haunting novella based on her adolescence, exemplifies her unflinching exploration of trauma, desire, and the fragility of the self. Despite her tragic suicide, Zürn's legacy endures as a vital voice in surrealist and feminist literature, offering raw insights into the female psyche.
