Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916) was an Italian painter and sculptor whose fervent embrace of Futurism revolutionized early 20th-century art, capturing the dynamism of modern life through innovative techniques and manifestos. Born in Reggio Calabria, he moved to Milan, where he co-authored the seminal Technical Manifesto of Futurist Painting in 1910, advocating for the depiction of movement, speed, and simultaneity in visual form. Boccioni's sculptures, such as Unique Forms of Continuity in Space, embodied his theory of 'plastic dynamism,' blending form and motion to evoke the energy of the machine age. His writings, including the influential Futurist Painting Sculpture (Plastic Dynamism), articulated the movement's radical principles, influencing generations of artists. Tragically cut short by his death in a military training accident during World War I, Boccioni's legacy endures as a cornerstone of modernist innovation.
