Tsunetomo Yamamoto
About the Author
Tsunetomo Yamamoto (1659–1719) was a Japanese samurai and scholar from the Saga Domain in Hizen Province, renowned for his profound insights into the bushido code that defined the warrior class during the Edo period. Born into a family of retainers, he served under the daimyo Mitsushige Hosokawa but chose to retire to a hermitage after his lord's death, dedicating his later years to philosophical reflection and teaching. Dictated to his disciple Tashiro Tsuramoto between 1709 and 1716, Yamamoto's seminal work captures the essence of samurai ethics, emphasizing loyalty, honor, and the acceptance of death as a path to enlightenment. His writings continue to influence modern interpretations of Japanese martial philosophy and cultural identity.
