About the Author

Trent De Boer is an archaeologist and cartoonist whose work bridges the gritty realities of fieldwork with sharp, satirical humor. Drawing from his extensive experience digging through the dirt of ancient sites across North America, De Boer captures the absurdities, hardships, and camaraderie of life as a 'shovel bum'—the unsung laborers of archaeology. His debut graphic novel, Shovel Bum: Comix of Archaeological Field Life, offers a raw, illustrated memoir that demystifies the profession, blending autobiographical anecdotes with witty commentary on the quirks of academic pursuits and manual labor. A passionate advocate for the underappreciated voices in science, De Boer's storytelling resonates with anyone who's ever toiled in the shadows of grand discoveries, proving that even the mundane can yield treasures of insight and laughter.
