Thornton Dial (1928–2016) was a visionary self-taught artist from Alabama, whose raw and powerful works emerged from the heart of the African American South, transforming everyday materials like scrap metal, bones, and found objects into profound statements on history, race, and resilience. Born into a family of sharecroppers during the Great Depression, Dial labored for decades in a steel mill, channeling his experiences of labor, segregation, and civil rights struggles into an extraordinary body of art that he kept largely private until the 1980s. His assemblages and paintings, often monumental in scale, blend folk traditions with bold political commentary, earning him recognition as a key figure in outsider art.
