Thomas Stamford Raffles
About the Author
Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles (1781–1826) was a British colonial administrator, scholar, and visionary whose life bridged the worlds of empire-building and intellectual pursuit. Best known for founding the city of Singapore in 1819, which laid the foundation for modern Southeast Asia's economic powerhouse, Raffles was also a dedicated naturalist and historian. During his tenure as Lieutenant-Governor of Java under British rule from 1811 to 1816, he immersed himself in the island's rich cultural heritage, authoring the seminal two-volume work 'The History of Java, v. 1-2,' published in 1817. This comprehensive study detailed Java's geography, antiquities, customs, and governance, drawing from extensive fieldwork and local sources to challenge Eurocentric views of the archipelago. Raffles's writings not only preserved invaluable ethnographic knowledge but also advocated for humane colonial policies, influencing British imperial thought. His legacy endures as a pioneer of cross-cultural scholarship, blending administrative acumen with a profound appreciation for the lands he governed.
