Susan Stern

About the Author

Susan Stern is a pioneering feminist author and activist whose life and writings offer profound insights into the turbulent era of 1960s radicalism. Born in the Pacific Northwest, she became a key figure in the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and later joined the Weather Underground, living underground as part of the anti-war and anti-imperialist struggle. Her seminal memoir, With the Weathermen: The Personal Journal of a Revolutionary Woman (Subterranean Lives), provides an unflinching, first-person account of her experiences, blending raw emotion with sharp political analysis. After resurfacing in the 1970s, Stern continued her advocacy for women's rights and social justice, authoring essays and speaking on the intersections of feminism and revolutionary politics. Her work remains a vital resource for understanding the personal costs and ideological fervor of America's countercultural movements, inspiring generations to reflect on activism's enduring legacy.
