Sulpicius Severus (c. 363–425 AD) was a Gallo-Roman historian, hagiographer, and Christian writer whose works offer invaluable insights into the early Christian world. Born into a wealthy family in Aquitaine, he studied law before converting to Christianity around 390 AD, influenced by his pious wife and the ascetic teachings of St. Martin of Tours, whom he later befriended. Renouncing his secular career, Severus retreated to a monastery he founded in Gaul, dedicating himself to writing. His texts blend historical narrative with spiritual reflection, preserving the lives of saints and chronicling the Church's formative years.
