Strabo
About the Author
Strabo, the renowned ancient Greek geographer, historian, and philosopher, was born around 64 BCE in Amaseia, Pontus, and flourished during the transition from the Roman Republic to the Empire. Educated in Nysa under the tutelage of Aristodemus, he traveled extensively across the Mediterranean world, from Egypt to Armenia, absorbing knowledge of diverse cultures, landscapes, and political landscapes. His magnum opus, the seventeen-volume Geography, offers an encyclopedic survey of the known world, blending empirical observation with classical learning to describe regions, peoples, and natural phenomena with remarkable detail and insight. Strabo's work not only preserved vital information from earlier sources like Eratosthenes but also influenced subsequent cartographers and explorers, cementing his legacy as a foundational figure in the study of the earth and its inhabitants.
