Souseki Natsume, one of Japan's most revered literary figures of the Meiji era, was a novelist, poet, and scholar whose works profoundly shaped modern Japanese literature. Born in 1867 in Edo (now Tokyo), he studied English literature at the University of Tokyo before pursuing further education in England, where he encountered Western literary influences that he skillfully blended with traditional Japanese sensibilities. Natsume's novels often explore themes of individualism, societal conflict, and the human psyche, reflecting the tensions of Japan's rapid modernization.
