Sima Guang (1019–1086), styled Junshi and honored with the title 'Wen' by Emperor Shenzong, was a distinguished Song dynasty statesman, historian, and scholar whose intellectual contributions profoundly shaped Chinese historiography. Appointed as a Hanlin scholar at the remarkably young age of 20, he rose through the ranks to become Grand Councilor and a key advisor to Emperor Shenzong, advocating for conservative reforms amid the era's political turbulence. Sima Guang's magnum opus, the Zizhi Tongjian, a monumental chronicle spanning from 403 BCE to 959 CE, was compiled over 19 years with the collaboration of a team of scholars, serving as a comprehensive mirror for governance to guide future rulers in avoiding the pitfalls of history. His meticulous editing and the inclusion of Hu Sanxing's annotations in the traditional vertical layout edition underscore his enduring legacy as a guardian of moral and historical wisdom, influencing generations of leaders and thinkers in East Asia.
