About the Author

Sima Guang (1019–1086), styled Junshi and honored with the title 'Wen' by Emperor Song, was a distinguished Chinese historian, statesman, and scholar-official of the Northern Song dynasty. Renowned for his profound commitment to moral governance and historical scholarship, Sima Guang led a team of scholars in compiling the monumental Zizhi Tongjian, a comprehensive chronicle of Chinese history from 403 BCE to 959 CE, spanning 294 volumes. This exhaustive work, edited under his direction and later annotated by Hu Sanxing, serves as an invaluable resource for understanding dynastic cycles, political wisdom, and ethical leadership. As a key advisor to Emperor Shenzong, Sima Guang championed conservative reforms to preserve Confucian principles amid the era's transformative changes, leaving an enduring legacy as one of China's greatest historians whose insights continue to illuminate the past for modern readers.
