Simon Pokagon (1830-1899) was a Potawatomi author, orator, and advocate whose life bridged the traditional world of his Native American heritage and the evolving landscape of 19th-century America. Born near present-day South Bend, Indiana, he navigated the challenges of cultural displacement following the Indian Removal Act, yet pursued education at Oberlin College and became a prominent voice for Indigenous rights. Pokagon's writings eloquently captured the beauty of Potawatomi folklore, the rhythms of nature, and the poignant struggles of his people against encroachment and loss. Through his literary efforts, he sought to preserve tribal stories and foster understanding between Native and non-Native communities, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the first Native American authors to publish in English.
