Sima Qian (c. 145–86 BCE), revered as the father of Chinese historiography, was a renowned scholar, historian, and poet of the Han Dynasty. Born into a family of court astronomers, he inherited his father's role as Taishi (Grand Historian) and dedicated much of his life to compiling the monumental Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), a comprehensive chronicle spanning from mythical antiquity to his contemporary era. Despite enduring severe personal hardships, including castration as punishment for defending a disgraced general, Sima Qian persevered in his scholarly pursuits, blending meticulous research with vivid narrative flair.
