Sima Guang (1019–1086), a towering figure in Chinese historiography, was a Song dynasty scholar-official renowned for his meticulous scholarship and commitment to moral governance. Born in Shanxi province, he rose through the imperial examination system to become a key advisor to emperors, advocating for conservative reforms amid political turmoil. His magnum opus, the Zizhi Tongjian, a comprehensive chronicle spanning from 403 BCE to 959 CE, was compiled over nineteen years with a team of assistants, drawing on vast historical records to provide lessons for rulers on the perils of excess and the virtues of restraint. This monumental work, presented in multiple volumes, exemplifies Sima's belief in history as a mirror for ethical leadership, influencing generations of thinkers and statesmen across East Asia.
