About the Author

Shlomo Venezia was an Italian Jew born in 1923 in Thessaloniki, Greece, whose life was irrevocably altered by the horrors of the Holocaust. Deported to Auschwitz in 1944, he was forced into the unimaginable role of a Sonderkommando, one of the prisoners compelled to work in the gas chambers and crematoria. Miraculously surviving the camp's liberation in 1945, Venezia returned to Italy, where he rebuilt his life as a craftsman and family man in Rome. For decades, he carried the weight of his experiences in silence, until the late 1990s when he began sharing his testimony to ensure the atrocities of the Nazi regime were never forgotten.
