Sergius Bulgakov (1871-1944) was a Russian Orthodox theologian, philosopher, and economist whose intellectual journey took him from Marxism to idealism and finally to a profound Christian faith, profoundly shaping 20th-century religious thought. Born in the Ukrainian town of Livny, he initially pursued a career in economics, earning a doctorate and serving as a professor at Moscow University before the Bolshevik Revolution upended his life. Exiled after the Russian Civil War, Bulgakov found refuge in Paris, where he joined the faculty of the St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute and was ordained a priest. His writings blend rigorous philosophical inquiry with mystical theology, exploring themes of divine wisdom, human suffering, and the Holy Spirit's role in salvation. Despite enduring personal tragedies, including the loss of his first wife and health struggles, Bulgakov's legacy endures as a bridge between Eastern Orthodoxy and Western philosophy, influencing ecumenical dialogues and sophiology.
