Sarat Chandra Das
About the Author
Sarat Chandra Das (1846–1917) was a pioneering Indian scholar, explorer, and polyglot whose groundbreaking work in Tibetan studies bridged the cultural and linguistic divides between India and the Himalayan regions. Born in Chittagong, now in Bangladesh, Das served as a teacher and later embarked on clandestine expeditions into Tibet, often disguised as a Buddhist monk, to document its forbidden landscapes and traditions. His linguistic prowess enabled him to compile extensive vocabularies and grammatical insights, culminating in his seminal A Tibetan-English Dictionary: With Sanskrit Synonyms (1902), a monumental reference that remains invaluable for scholars of Indo-Tibetan philology. Das's writings, infused with meticulous observation and a deep respect for Tibetan Buddhism, not only advanced academic understanding but also highlighted the rich interplay of Sanskrit, Tibetan, and English in preserving ancient knowledge.
