Samuel Beal (1825-1889) was a pioneering British Sinologist, Buddhist scholar, and translator whose groundbreaking work illuminated the ancient connections between China and the Western world through Buddhist lenses. A graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, Beal served as a chaplain in the Royal Navy and later as the first Professor of Chinese at University College, London, where he dedicated his life to translating key Chinese texts on Buddhism and travelogues. His meticulous scholarship brought to light the journeys of the intrepid monk Hiuen Tsiang, offering invaluable insights into 7th-century Central Asia, India, and the Silk Road.
