Samir Kassir was a distinguished Lebanese historian, journalist, and intellectual whose work profoundly shaped understandings of Middle Eastern history and contemporary politics. Born in 1964 in Beirut to a Palestinian father and Syrian mother, Kassir studied philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris before returning to his native city, where he co-founded the independent newspaper An-Nahar and became a prominent voice for democracy and cultural revival. His writings often blended rigorous historical analysis with passionate advocacy for Lebanon's pluralistic identity, critiquing authoritarianism and sectarianism while celebrating the city's cosmopolitan spirit. Tragically assassinated in 2005 amid a wave of political violence, Kassir's legacy endures through his insightful essays and books that continue to inspire scholars and activists across the Arab world.
