About the Author

Sadegh Hedayat, a pioneering figure in modern Persian literature, was born in 1903 in Tehran, Iran, into an aristocratic family, and his works profoundly influenced the trajectory of Iranian intellectual and artistic expression. Educated in Europe, where he studied engineering and dentistry, Hedayat was deeply drawn to Western literature, philosophy, and folklore, which he blended with Iranian mysticism and social critique to craft narratives that exposed the hypocrisies of traditional society and the alienation of the modern individual. His masterpiece, The Blind Owl, a haunting novella of psychological torment and existential despair, remains a cornerstone of 20th-century Persian fiction, translated widely and revered for its innovative stream-of-consciousness style. Tragically, Hedayat took his own life in Paris in 1951, leaving behind a legacy of introspective prose that continues to resonate with readers exploring themes of isolation, identity, and cultural dislocation.
