Robert Smith Candlish was a prominent Scottish theologian and minister of the Free Church of Scotland, renowned for his eloquent preaching and scholarly contributions to Reformed theology. Born in 1806 in Edinburgh, he studied at the University of Edinburgh and was ordained in 1833, later becoming a key figure in the Disruption of 1843 that formed the Free Church. As minister of Free St. George's in Edinburgh, Candlish delivered powerful sermons that addressed the spiritual needs of his congregation and the broader church. His writings, including commentaries on biblical texts and treatises on doctrine, continue to influence evangelical thought. A devoted family man and educator, he served as principal of the New College in Edinburgh until his death in 1873, leaving a legacy of fervent faith and intellectual rigor.
