Richard Quang-Anh Tran is a historian and scholar whose work illuminates the intricate intersections of gender, sexuality, and colonial history in Southeast Asia. Drawing from extensive archival research in Vietnamese and French sources, he explores the lives of queer individuals navigating the turbulent socio-political landscape of early 20th-century Vietnam. Tran's scholarship challenges dominant narratives by centering marginalized voices and revealing the fluidity of gender expressions under colonial rule. With a PhD in History from the University of California, Berkeley, he has taught at leading universities and contributed to academic journals on postcolonial studies. His debut book, Queer Vietnam: A History of Gender Transgression, 1920–1945, has been praised for its innovative approach and rigorous analysis, earning accolades from the Association for Asian Studies.
