About the Author
René Descartes (1596–1650), the eminent French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist, is widely regarded as the father of modern philosophy for his groundbreaking contributions to epistemology, metaphysics, and the philosophy of mind. Educated at the Jesuit College Royal Henry-Legrand and later serving in military and diplomatic roles, Descartes spent much of his life in the Netherlands, where he developed his ideas in relative seclusion. His method of radical doubt, famously encapsulated in the dictum 'Cogito, ergo sum' (I think, therefore I am), revolutionized Western thought by seeking indubitable foundations for knowledge. Descartes' works, including The Philosophical Writings of Descartes, Volume I, translated by John Cottingham, Robert Stoothoff, and Dugald Murdoch, continue to influence philosophy, science, and theology, bridging the medieval and modern eras with rigorous rationalism and innovative dualism.
