About the Author

Raja Rao, one of the pioneering figures in Indian English literature, was born in 1908 in Hassan, Mysore State, and spent much of his life traversing between India, France, and the United States, drawing from his rich cultural heritage to explore themes of identity, spirituality, and the clash between tradition and modernity. Educated at the University of Madras and later in France, Rao's writing profoundly reflects his deep engagement with Indian philosophy, Gandhian ideals, and the quest for a uniquely Indian narrative voice in English. His seminal work, Kanthapura, vividly portrays village life during the independence movement, blending myth, folklore, and social realism to capture the essence of rural India. Throughout his career, Rao's introspective and philosophical approach has influenced generations of writers, establishing him as a cornerstone of postcolonial literature. He passed away in 2006, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate globally.
