Yung Wing (1828-1912), born Rong Hong in Guangdong Province, China, was a pioneering figure in modern Chinese history, renowned as the first Chinese student to graduate from an American university—Yale College in 1854. His seminal work, 'The First Chinese Graduate of Yale,' later known as 'West Learning Spreads to the East' (西学东渐记), chronicles his transformative journey from a modest village upbringing to becoming a bridge between Eastern and Western civilizations. As a diplomat, educator, and reformer, Yung advocated for China's modernization through Western education and technology, establishing the Yale-in-China program and serving as a key advisor in the Qing government's self-strengthening efforts.
