About the Author

Shen Fu (1762–after 1803), a Qing dynasty scholar and artist, is celebrated for his intimate memoir 'Fusheng Liuji' (Six Records of a Floating Life), a poignant reflection on his life and marriage to the talented Chen Yun. Born into a modest family in Hangzhou, Shen pursued a career in painting and calligraphy while navigating the constraints of imperial bureaucracy and personal hardships. His writing captures the ephemeral joys of everyday existence, blending nostalgia with vivid descriptions of domestic bliss, cultural pursuits, and the bittersweet passage of time. Though Shen's life ended in obscurity, his work endures as a gem of classical Chinese literature, offering profound insights into 18th-century society and the human heart.
