About the Author

Qin Huitian (1702–1764), a distinguished scholar-official of the Qing dynasty, was renowned for his profound contributions to Chinese historiography and ritual studies. Born into a family of intellectuals, he rose through the imperial examination system, serving in various administrative roles while dedicating himself to scholarly pursuits. His magnum opus, Wu li tong kao, a monumental 262-volume compendium on the five rites—auspicious, auspicious, military, penal, and felicitous—draws upon classical texts, historical records, and contemporary observations to provide an exhaustive examination of ceremonial practices across dynasties.
