Carson McCullers, born Lula Carson Smith in 1917 in Columbus, Georgia, was a prodigious American author whose literary career began at the tender age of 23 with the publication of her debut novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. Drawing from her own experiences with illness and isolation, McCullers crafted poignant narratives that delve into the human psyche, exploring themes of loneliness, unrequited love, and the search for connection in a fragmented world. Despite battling rheumatic fever and other health issues that confined her to a wheelchair by her early thirties, she produced a body of work that resonates with emotional depth and Southern Gothic intensity. Her novel The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, a landmark of 20th-century literature, was selected as one of the 100 Best English-Language Novels of the 20th Century and recommended by Oprah's Book Club, with its film adaptation earning two Oscar nominations.
