普濟
About the Author
普濟 (Puji), a revered Chan Buddhist monk of the Southern Song Dynasty, is celebrated for his profound contributions to the preservation and dissemination of Zen teachings through meticulous compilation. Born in the early 13th century, he served as abbot of the Tianning Monastery in Ningbo, where he dedicated his life to scholarly pursuits amid the turbulent times of Mongol invasions. His magnum opus, the 'Wudeng Huiyuan' (Compendium of the Five Lamps), a monumental 20-volume collection, chronicles the lineages, sayings, and enlightenment stories of Chan masters across five generations, drawing from earlier texts like the 'Jingde Chuandeng Lu' to illuminate the essence of Buddhist wisdom. This work, later digitized in Japanese editions through the National Diet Library Collection, remains a cornerstone for students of East Asian philosophy, offering timeless insights into meditation, koans, and the path to awakening. Pruji's legacy endures as a bridge between historical doctrine and contemporary spiritual practice.
