About the Author

Sextus Propertius, a prominent Roman poet of the Augustan age, was born around 50 BCE in Assisi and flourished in the literary circles of early imperial Rome, where he became a key figure among the elegiac poets alongside contemporaries like Tibullus and Ovid. Renowned for his passionate and introspective verses, Propertius dedicated much of his work to his muse Cynthia, exploring themes of love, jealousy, politics, and mythology with a blend of Hellenistic influences and Roman innovation. His surviving collection, the Elegies, comprises four books that capture the emotional turbulence of romantic entanglement and the socio-political undercurrents of his era, establishing him as a master of the elegiac form whose influence endures in Western literature. Though his life remains somewhat obscure, Propertius's poetry reflects a man deeply engaged with the artistic and cultural shifts of his time, leaving a legacy of lyrical intensity and stylistic elegance.
