Philipp Otto Runge (1777–1810) was a visionary German artist, painter, and theorist whose brief but brilliant career bridged the worlds of Romanticism and early modernism, profoundly influencing the development of color theory in art. Born in Wolgast, Runge studied at the Copenhagen Academy and later in Dresden, where he immersed himself in the intellectual circles of Goethe and the Schlegel brothers, forging a unique synthesis of science, philosophy, and aesthetics. His innovative approach to color as a fundamental element of artistic expression culminated in his seminal treatise, 'Farben-Kugel oder Construction des Verhältnisses aller Mischungen der Farben zu einander, und ihrer vollständigen Affinität' (1810), which proposed a spherical model for understanding color harmonies and mixtures, laying groundwork for later chromatic studies. Runge's paintings, including symbolic biblical scenes and allegorical works like 'The Morning' and 'The Small Morning,' reveal a mystical intensity and luminous palette that anticipated abstract art. Tragically cut short by tuberculosis at age 33, Runge's legacy endures as a pioneer who elevated color from mere pigment to a philosophical language of the soul.
