About the Author
Phaswane Mpe was a South African author and academic whose incisive prose captured the complexities of postapartheid society. Born in 1970 in Johannesburg, he grew up in the township of Tembisa, experiences that profoundly shaped his writing. Mpe earned a PhD in English from the University of the Witwatersrand, where he lectured before his untimely death in 2004 at age 34. His work often explored themes of migration, urban alienation, and the lingering scars of apartheid, blending sharp social commentary with a poignant sense of place. Through his novel Welcome to Our Hillbrow: A Novel of Postapartheid South Africa (Modern African Writing Series), Mpe illuminated the lives of young black South Africans navigating love, loss, and the ghosts of the past in a rapidly changing nation, earning acclaim for its innovative narrative voice and unflinching honesty.
