About the Author

Persius, the Roman poet Aulus Persius Flaccus (34-62 CE), was a Stoic philosopher and satirist whose brief life produced a legacy of sharp, introspective verse that critiqued the follies of Roman society. Born into wealth in Volterra, he studied under the Stoic teacher Cornutus and immersed himself in the literary circles of Rome, befriending luminaries like Lucan. His satires, written in a dense, allusive style influenced by Horace and Lucilius, explore themes of hypocrisy, materialism, and moral integrity with biting wit and philosophical depth. Though he died young at 27, Persius's work, posthumously edited by his mentor, has endured as a cornerstone of classical satire, offering timeless reflections on human nature and ethical living.
